Ask Auntie, CNS Local Life, Caymanian statusWill the public be able to purchase the new seabed maps recently put out by the UK?  If so, how much will they cost and where will they be available?

Auntie’s answer: While the UK Hydrographic Office (UKHO) has given new information on the seabed to the Lands and Survey Department (see New seabed map to steer vessels to safety), an official explained that the “data was given to us with specific conditions on how it was to be used”.

Unfortunately, with regards to your question, the agreement was that the data “is for internal use only, and is not to be used for navigational purposes”.

During the meeting when the data was handed over “the question was raised” over releasing the information to third parties. The UKHO said they “will consider the request and respond at a later date”, according to the Lands and Survey Department.

No timeline for that decision was given and until permission is granted the data will be “used internally by government”.
