UCCI grad earns scholarship for further studies
(CNS Local Life): Laurent Bodden, a graduate of the University College of the Cayman Islands’ (UCCI) hospitality programme, will be pursuing further studies in food and beverage management, with the help of a scholarship from international spice and seasoning business, McCormick & Company. Through the company’s McCormick Global Ingredients Limited (MGIL) and its Wendy Bullock Lifetime Achievement Bursary, Bodden, the first recipient of that grant, will receive US$5,000 annually.
“Laurent is a promising, talented young man who has maintained constant focus and discipline throughout his academic career at UCCI,” said Wayne Jackson, Director of the School of Hospitality Studies (SHS).
The budding hospitality professional stood out among his peers, Jackson said in a press release. “Laurent’s determination and commitment was evident from the beginning, but his potential for success in the industry became even more apparent as he impressed his mentors with his work ethic and willingness to sharpen his skills.”
Bodden has been accepted by Johnson and Wales University in Florida, and plans to pursue a career in the hospitality industry upon his return, the release stated.
MGIL has pledged US$5,000 annually for ten years to support Caymanian SHS graduates to pursue further studies in culinary and food and beverage. The scholars may also have the opportunity to spend a week at McCormick to explore diverse career opportunities in the food industry, with the prospect of a summer internship.
Donald Pratt, managing director of MGIL, welcomed the decision, saying, “We congratulate Laurent on receiving the first ‘Wendy Bullock Lifetime Achievement Bursary’, in honour of the 49 years Wendy dedicated to McCormick. Laurent is a very worthy recipient, achieving an exceptional standard in his chosen course and we are delighted to play a part in helping him achieve his full potential.
“By investing in Laurent’s further education, and that of future recipients, we are investing in the future of Cayman and hope to inspire the Islands’ young people to consider the pursuit of a career in the food industry.”
The scholarship is awarded on the basis of merit, and the selection committee will give special attention to scholastic, sporting, and civic attainments, as well as to candidates’ character and ability to lead. Bodden, who also shines as a football star and has participated in on- and off-campus events, was deemed deserving of the opportunity, UCCI said in the release.
Dr Stacy McAfee, UCCI president and CEO, congratulated Bodden, saying, “We are very proud of Laurent whose exemplary performance has allowed him to pursue his dreams with the generous support of McCormick, a regular contributor to the wellbeing of this community.”
McAfee underscored the importance of such opportunities for graduates as they prepare to take their place in society. “UCCI provides a student-centred education that allows each person to develop unique gifts and talents while preparing for a meaningful life and rewarding career,” she said. “Scholarships from and cooperative learning experiences with employers ensure clear pathways to employment and enhance workforce readiness for Caymanians.”
