Strongman ‘The Beast’ coming to Cayman
(CNS Local Life): Englishman Eddie Hall, the 2017 World’s Strongest Man, will be coming to Cayman to participate in the first-ever Cayman Islands Strongman Competition. Hall, also known as “The Beast”, is the reigning Guinness World Records holder for heaviest strongman deadlift (500 kg/1,102.3lbs in 2016).
At the event, set for Saturday, 5 October at the Lions Centre, individuals and teams will compete for titles in categories including the Atlas Stone lift, Farmer’s Walk and Tire Flip.
There will also be strength competitions for kids and Hall will perform demonstrations.
The competition is being hosted by the Cayman Islands Powerlifting Organisation, a group of heavy-lifting and training enthusiasts, many of whom train at Cayman Islands Barbell Club. Some of the proceeds from the competition will benefit local charities Cayman Heart Fund, the Alex Panton Foundation and the United Against Bullying Foundation as well as assist Cayman’s powerlifters with expenses for overseas competitions.
“The powerlifting community here in Cayman is small but we’re passionate and we’re growing,” said Cayman Islands Powerlifting president Tony McInerney in a press release. “Some of our members and athletes – particularly the younger ones – have found the sport to be an effective outlet for dealing with personal physical, emotional and mental challenges they are facing. This competition will be a great boost for their self-confidence and help prepare them for upcoming competitions.”
He said that Hall, who has a similar story to some of these athletes, travels around the world sharing his experience with the hope that he can inspire and help others. “I believe this is what attracted him to this particular event, and we want to make sure as many youths as possible have the opportunity to hear about his incredible journey,” McInerney said.
He added that while in Cayman, Hall will talk to students about his struggles with anxiety, depression and suicidal thoughts and how he found purpose, happiness and success through powerlifting.
“I’m really looking forward to coming to the Cayman Islands and getting to meet everyone,” Hall said of his upcoming visit. “I hope my story will help others see what can be achieved through dedication and hard work.”
Admission to the Cayman Islands Strongman Competition, which will run from 12pm-5pm, is $10 for adults and $5 for kids 12 and under. Food and drinks will also be on sale.
