Cayman culture on display at CARIFESTA
(CNS Local Life): A 50-plus strong group of cultural ambassadors are in Trinidad and Tobago representing the Cayman Islands at the 14th annual Caribbean Festival of the Arts (CARIFESTA) to share the best of Cayman’s music, dance, theatre, as well as visual, culinary and heritage arts. The festival, which runs from 16-25 August, has attracted artists from more than 20 countries in the region, plus Canada, showcasing the creativity and diversity of the Caribbean and its diaspora.
Cayman has sent its largest-ever contingent of performers and artists as well as cultural professionals to participate in CARIFESTA, whose theme this year is “The Tangible and Intangible – Connect, Share, Invest”. In explaining the theme, organisers said it focuses on facilitating the objectives of the festival: “Finding the ways and means for Caribbean people, artists, and cultural practitioners to Connect with each other; Share ideas and information; and Invest in the development of our cultural explorations, products and exchanges thus building stronger national, regional and creative industries.”
On Sunday, 18 August, the combined Cayman Dance Troupe, comprising dancers from the University College of the Cayman Islands, Dance Unlimited and Dreamchasers, took to the stage at the Southern Academy for Performing Arts in San Fernando as part of “We DancINg Trinbago!”, in which dancers from 11 countries performed.
The following evening Cayman joined Anguilla, Montserrat and Jamaica in artistic productions showcasing the best of each country’s culture and heritage. Four countries will be featured each night of CARIFESTA.
Over the course of the festival Cayman’s cultural contributions will include, among others, musicians, singers, actors, a storyteller, a filmmaker, heritage crafters and chefs.
Ahead of travelling to Trinidad, the Cayman National Cultural Foundation put on four nights of music, dance and theatre at the Harquail Theatre to preview the performances planned for Trinidad as a CARIFESTA Showcase fundraiser.
