UCCI president takes on role as international mentor
(CNS): Starting later this year, University College of the Cayman Islands (UCCI) president Roy Bodden will be adding international mentor to his job description, under an initiative established by the MasterCard Foundation. Bodden recently accepted an invitation to become a mentor in the organisation’s scholars programme, whose purpose is to advance leadership skills, create connections and support transitions for its scholars.
The participants attend schools and universities around the globe but mainly hail from sub-Saharan Africa and study on scholarships provided by the foundation. The programme aims to advance leaders with integrity through designed learning materials and modules. The foundation seeks to build a community of mentors to guide and coach scholars as they progress through their journey.
In inviting Bodden to join as a mentor, associate programme manager Faith Biyapo said, “When looking at our network, we thought of you as a natural choice, since your background, experience and expertise would provide such a benefit to our scholars.”
This work as a voluntary mentor dovetails with Bodden’s efforts in UCCI’s six-credit elective Men of Standard programme, established in 2010, in which members of the community present seminars on such subjects as deportment, self-esteem, choosing role models, conflict resolution, sexual health, career choice and citizenship.
Bodden said of the opportunity: “I am humbled by this invitation especially in light of the fact that the good work being accomplished at UCCI is on the radar of an international corporation of the magnitude of MasterCard. It will be my delight to offer mentorship and I am sure that the experience will be highly rewarding and mutually beneficial.”
He expects to be assigned a cohort of four scholars at the scheduled October 2016 launch of the platform.
