Can I relicense car without any plates?
I know there is amnesty for expired vehicle licences. What happens if someone doesn’t have plate number to hand in but can hand in the vehicle logbook? Vehicle logbook will have VIN numbers which they can crosscheck in the system. Will they ask no questions as part of amnesty rules? Auntie’s answer: Under the amnesty, […]
Do visitors still need to get temporary driving permits?
For many years visitors to the Cayman Islands have been required to purchase a temporary driver’s permit in order to rent and/or drive a vehicle. In most cases the visitors purchased the temporary permits from the car rental agency. Recently I have read online that the temporary driver’s permit is no longer required in Cayman […]

Where to pick up new licence plates on Sister Islands?
What about the Sister Islands? What is the process and where is the pickup of new licence plates? Auntie’s answer: This question came as a comment on a recent column on the issuing of new licence plates. I have to admit that when I saw the question I was disappointed that I hadn’t thought to […]
How many new licence plates have been issued?
Auntie’s follow-up answer: After a previous column dealing with the issuing of the new licence plates, I asked the Department of Vehicle and Drivers’ Licensing for clarification on the numbers, since there still seem to be many cars on the road carrying old plates. Among the questions asked were, how many plates have been exchanged […]
Is importing licence-plate covers allowed?
Could you maybe look into why the importation of such (licence-plate) covers is not banned? Auntie’s answer: This question was asked in a comment on a column that ran in January, “Stop obscuring licence plates”. They say timing is everything, so I want to point out that the column in question is from January this […]
Where is my new licence plate?
I have been checking the Department of Vehicle and Drivers’ Licensing (DVDL) site for more than a year for my licence number to appear on the list of plates ready to be exchanged for new ones. It looks like the last updated list of licences was July last year. What is the reason for the […]
Stop obscuring licence plates
I believe it is illegal and am certain that a car will not pass its inspection with tinted plastic over the number plates – can you confirm? If it is illegal, then why are so many drivers blatantly driving with their plates obscured? The only reason I can see for making your plates hard to read […]
Trucks need to be better regulated
Are there any rules that apply to the increasing number of large, poorly driven and maintained trucks that threaten the safety of motorists using Shamrock Road? I have seen a speeding truck pass a school bus as children were alighting, trucks that spill their wet load onto vehicles behind, numerous trucks that belch thick black smoke […]
Missing motorbike licence plate causing problems
I start by referencing one of your previous Department of Vehicle and Drivers’ Licensing (DVDL) answers (see New licence plates should have original numbers): “A customer can request a new number and he or she would have to pay to make that change. Or, if the new plates were ready for collection but it turns out […]
Can you activate an expired Cayman licence?
My son-in-law visiting several years ago, who had obtained a Cayman driving licence when he used to work here more than a decade ago, was asked to pay all back fees for his old Cayman licence in order to drive here whilst on holiday. Is that nonsensical rule still in place? Auntie’s answer: A Department […]
Missed deadline for switching to Cayman licence
As a foreigner who lives here on the islands, one is obliged to obtain a local driving licence on top of the licence one has acquired abroad. Now, I was told that if you miss a certain deadline, you have to take a new test in written and practical form. But the problem seems to […]
No car inspections when it rains
A colleague of mine has just advised that the licensing department can no longer provide vehicle inspections in rainy weather. Is this true? Being that we have hurricane season five months out of the year, is this realistic? Do you know what the reason for this rule is if it’s in fact true? Auntie’s answer: […]
