Premier marks 60th anniversary of first elections
(CNS): Premier Alden McLaughlin highlighted the importance of his own family to the political history of Cayman in an address marking the 60th anniversary of the first ever general election here in 1959. McLaughlin said his grandfather, William Allen McLaughlin, was on the ballot, and his grandmother, Ethel McLaughlin, had fought for women’s rights and paved the way for four women to run for office in the first national poll.
His grandfather won his seat in East End, though the first women nominated to run for elected office all lost. But the premier said the 1959 elections were nevertheless a turning point because women finally had a voice and were able to run for elections and hold office.
