Walk raises $75k for cancer
(CNS Local Life): Hundreds of people took part in the 8th Annual CIBC FirstCaribbean Walk for the Cure on a rainy Sunday morning earlier this month and raised more than US$75,000 to support local cancer patients. Participants of all ages walked or ran the 5k course, from Seven Mile Public Beach to the Fidelity Financial Centre and back.
Through a range of fundraising activities and events throughout the year, CIBC FirstCaribbean employees have raised more than US$300,000 over the last eight years in the Cayman Islands, with all of the funds remaining on island.
The regional bank’s walk manager, Shadden McLaughlin, said, “Walk for the Cure isn’t just a walk, it is a movement to help save the lives of cancer patients. For our bank, supporting the community is built into our foundation. This popular walk gives staff, sponsors and participants the opportunity to celebrate those who lost the battle with the disease and give strength to those still fighting.”
New walk executive co-chair Dan Wright, said, “By uniting our communities and raising money, we can help the Cayman Islands Cancer Society help others with providing free information and support, help people reduce their cancer risk with early detection screenings or find it early when it may be more treatable.”
Apart from raising funds for the Cancer Society annually, the bank encourages people of all ages to realise their own potential for good health and well-being by walking.
Jennifer Weber, Operations Manager of the Cancer Society said that this year’s walk “was really moving because, despite the lousy weather conditions, the spirit of participants and organisers was awesome. To see so many still turn up with a smile on their face knowing the importance of the cause was incredible.”
She noted that the charity does not receive any money from the government, and relies of fundraisers.
CIBC FirstCaribbean is actively seeking sponsors for next year’s event. Interested parties should contact Shadden McLaughlin at 815-2405 or shadden.mclaughlin@cibcfcib.com or Joy Anglin at 815-2407 or joy.anglin@cibcfcib.com.
